Confederations Cup: Uruguay vs Tahiti preview

June 22, 2013
By: Nemanja Lazarevic

Uruguay vs NigeriaThe hard-fought victory over Nigeria made Uruguay the favourites to go through to the next round alongside Spain, with the match against Tahiti likely to be a good shooting practice for Oscar Tabarez’s men.

Their opponents have so far conceded 16 goals and it is highly unlikely they will fare much better in their final Confederations Cup game.

Uruguay did well to qualify for the tournament finals having won the 2011 Copa America, but some poor showings near the turn of the year was definitely a cause for concern.

La Celeste, nonetheless, recorded two important victories just before the tournament started, which hinted they might just be able to reach the final stages in Brazil.

The poor showing in the opening defeat to Spain did not go unnoticed, but after boss Oscar Tabarez made some changes to his starting line-up, the team looked much better against Nigeria.

The 2-1 victory over Super Eagles saw La Celeste close in on a place in the semis, although they obviously need to beat Tahiti as well in order to go through.

With Uruguay hot favourites to win this match, the only reasonable odds we could find are 1.90 (9/10) offered at Sportingbet on La Celeste to win by eight goals or more.

Diego Lugano misses out through suspension after picking up his second yellow card, with Sebastian Coates set to deputize.

Probable starting line-up (3-4-1-2): Muslera – Coates, Godin, Caceres – M. Pereira, Arevalo Rios, Gonzalez, C. Rodriguez – Forlan – Suarez, Cavani.

Minnows Tahiti were always going to have an extremely difficult task at the Confederations Cup, and they haven’t exactly managed to avoid embarrassment.

Eddy Etaeta’s side showed they are still not ready to play some of world’s top sides, losing 6-1 and 10-0 to Nigeria and Spain respectively, although they were certainly happy to have scored against the Super Eagles.

It was keeper Roche’s turn to be the hero against Spain, as his saved penalty was certainly the highlight of the day despite conceding no less than ten goals.

Tahiti are now getting ready for their final game at the tournament, and they will certainly be hoping to show some improvement following two heavy defeats.

Probable starting line-up (5-4-1): Roche – Aitamai, Ludivion, Vallar, J. Tehau, Lemaire – Vahirua, Bourebare, Caroine, Chong-Hue – A. Tehau.
