Confederations Cup: Tahiti vs Nigeria preview

Kenya vs NigeriaMinnows Tahiti start their first ever Confederations Cup campaign against Nigeria, one of just two sides that have never lost at this competition.

Team Fenua won the 2012 Oceania Nations Cup to qualify for the tournament in Brazil as they defeated Solomon Islands and New Caledonia on the way to the final.

However, the team have since failed to prove their worth in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, where they couldn’t come even close to mounting a serious challenge for the place at the tournament finals.

Tahiti lost five of first six qualifiers and they currently sit no less than 15 points behind leaders New Zealand, which speaks volumes about their lack of quality and experience.

Eddu Etaeta’s side arrive in Brazil hoping to avoid any embarrassments, but that looks easier said than done given they are set to face the likes of Nigeria, Uruguay and Spain.

Team Fenua have received a major boost as veteran striker Marama Vahirua agreed to represent the country of his birth, while captain Nicolas Vallar has recovered from an ankle problem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-1-2): Samin – Lemaire, Vallar, Wagemann, Faatiarau – Caroine, A. Tehau, L. Tehau – Atani – T. Tehau, Vahirua.

Following some very disappointing showings at tournament finals, Nigeria finally managed to impress at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, having won the title thanks to a 1-0 triumph over Burkina Faso in the final.

The team have since done well to remain at the top of their qualifying group and they now need just one point from the final group game against Malawi to qualify for the next round.

Having picked up four points from two away qualifiers in June, the Super Eagles arrive in Brazil full of confidence and no wonder they are just 1.08 (2/25) with Ladbrokes to see off minnows Tahiti in their opening fixture.

Boss Stephen Keshi has used the opportunity to introduce some talented youngsters to the side, with the likes of Benjamin, Babatunde, Eze and Gambo all hoping to get a chance to shine in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the likes of Victor Moses, Kalu Uche and Emmanuel Emenike all miss out, while Ogenyi Onazi was also forced to withdraw through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Enyeama – Ambrose, Omeruo, Oboabona, Elderson – Mikel, Ogu – Musa, Mba, Oduamadi – Ideye.
