Confederations Cup: Nigeria vs Spain preview

Spain vs UruguayFollowing the narrow defeat to Uruguay, Nigeria need to beat Spain in order to qualify for the next round, with the Super Eagles likely to require a comfortable win.

La Furia Roja, on the other hand, would secure the first place in the standings with one point, but that doesn’t mean they will not give their best to extend their winning run.

Having been placed in the same group as World Cup winners Spain and Copa America champions Uruguay, Nigeria needed to bring their A game to Brazil in order to progress to the semi-finals.

Long-drawn negotiations over performance bonuses and injuries to key players seriously destabilized Stephen Keshi’s squad, even if minnows Tahiti weren’t exactly able to expose all their weaknesses.

However, the clash against Uruguay proved the Super Eagles lack the quality and especially experience to perform at this level, with 2-1 defeat virtually ended their qualifying chances.

Nigeria now need to record a big win over Spain to qualify for the next round, but I still see no value in odds of 13.00 (12/1) offered at Sportingbet on home win.

Boss Stephen Keshi faces an anxious wait over star attacker Nnamdi Oduamadi after he picked up an injury against Uruguay, while Ogenyi Onazi is the latest player to have been ruled out.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Enyeama – Ambrose, Omeruo, Oboabona, Echiejile – Ogu, Mikel, Ogude – Oduamadi, Ideye, Musa.

Spain may have become the first ever national team to win three major trophies in a row, but they, nonetheless, arrived in Brazil searching for their first ever Confederations Cup title.

With Vicente Del Bosque having taken his strongest squad to the tournament finals, La Furia Roja were always going to be one of the main candidates for the trophy and they did well to justify all the hype.

Considering how well they played in their opening match against Uruguay, a 2-1 victory was hardly a just reward for their efforts, but it certainly acted as an additional confidence boost.

It was the second string side that recorded a 10-0 triumph over weak Haiti, with Fernando Torres and David Villa scoring seven goals between them.

However, with Del Bosque set to revert to his strongest team, both strikers look set to start on the bench as Roberto Soldado appears to be the preferred option at the moment.

Spain are 1.30 (3/10) with Paddy Power to record their third successive victory and you can be pretty sure they will not disappoint.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Casillas – Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba – Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta – Pedro, Soldado, Fabregas.
