Confederations Cup: Nigeria vs Uruguay preview

Nigeria vs TahitiNigeria may have hammered minnows Tahiti in their opening match, but lose this game and they will be out of the Confederations Cup.

Meanwhile, Uruguay looked really poor in the 2-1 defeat to Spain, but they still have got to be considered favourites in this clash.

Even if they did pretty well to keep their World Cup qualifying hopes alive, the Super Eagles arrived at the Confederations Cup in poor spirit following lengthy negotiations with national team chiefs over competition bonuses.

Having touched down in Brazil just one day ahead of their opening match, Nigeria were probably grateful for the favourable draw that pitted them against weak Tahiti.

The Super Eagles ran out 6-1 winners as their opponents were powerless to punish their mistakes, but boss Stephen Keshi was concerned by the number of missed chances.

He is obviously all too aware that his side have got to be more ruthless up front if they are to defeat Uruguay, with home win paying 4.60 (18/5) at Betfred.

It may be important to note Nigeria are unbeaten in last 19 matches in all competitions, but that record will be put to a serious test against La Celeste.

Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike and Kalu Uche didn’t even make the squad through injury, but Stephen Keshi is hoping Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi will recover from a knee problem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Enyeama – Ambrose, Oboabona, Omeruo, Echiejile – Onazi, Mikel, Mba – Oduamadi, Ideye, Musa.

Just like their next opponents, Uruguay have been struggling for form of late, although the away victory over Venezuela in a crucial World Cup qualifier seriously raised the players’ spirits.

La Celeste were, nonetheless, pretty disappointing in their opening match against Spain, as they rode their luck for much of the game and recorded a tolerable 2-1 defeat thanks to Luis Suarez’s free-kick goal.

In spite of the opening defeat, Uruguay will be in a great position to qualify if they see off under-strength Nigeria, and they look a good bet at 1.83 (5/6) offered at Paddy Power.

Having witnessed a pretty poor showing from his men against La Furia Roja, Oscar Tabarez looks set to make a number of changes to the starting line-up.

Chances are he is going to revert to a three-man defence, while Diego Forlan is likely to be recalled to the starting line-up.

Alvaro Gonzalez and Egidio Arevalo Rios are also pushing for starting places after they were surprisingly left out of the side against Spain.

Probable starting line-up (3-4-1-2): Muslera – Godin, Lugano, Caceres – M. Pereira, A. Gonzalez, Rios, C. Rodriguez – Forlan – Suarez, Cavani.

What sort of irrelevant conclusion was that in the beginning of your article. Nigeria has only played one out of three matches of which they top group B. Even if Nigeria get to lose today’s match, she will still be left to face spain. This is football not a mathematical calculation whereby u can just arrive at a conclusion easily.
