Barcelona vs PSG preview

PSG vs BarcaBarcelona were somewhat unfortunate not to win the first leg at Parc des Princes, but the Catalans are more than capable of making things right in the return match.

The last-gasp goal scored by Blaise Matuidi left the Saints in the tie, but they still have a mountain to climb if they are to pip their more illustrious opponents to the semi-final berth.

A lot has been said of team’s struggles while Tito Vilanova was undergoing medical treatment in New York, so no doubt everybody at the club was delighted to see the talented coach back at Camp Nou ahead of the PSG tie.

He seems to have inspired his side to a very good performance in Paris, although the Catalans were unlucky not to win having conceded the first goal from an offside position, while conceding the second so late in the game.

However, it was Leo Messi’s hamstring injury that was the biggest worry on the night, although Vilanova was glad to find out that the problem was not as serious as first feared.

Despite doing some training over the last few days, the Argentine is unlikely to be risked, but Barca are, nonetheless, 1.36 (4/9) favourites with SkyBet to win the return leg.

Meanwhile, they are also the number one candidates for the title, with Paddy Power paying 2.75 (7/4) on Barca to go all the way.

Adriano Correia and Pedro should return into contention, but Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano remain sidelined through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Valdes – Alves, Pique, Bartra, Alba – Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta – Sanchez, Fabregas, Villa.

The mere reaction of the players when they found out they would be playing Barcelona showed the difficulty of the task ahead of them, although the Saints were certainly not sporting a white flag.

Against all odds, PSG produced a very promising display against one of Europe’s top sides and even if they were somewhat fortunate to score both of their goals, it was nothing less than they deserved for a committed performance.

The Saints have since continued the rich vein of form on domestic stage by beating Rennes away, and they are still hoping they can produce a major upset and qualify for the semis.

That is clearly a long shot, but there will be some PSG fans taking odds of 6.50 (11/2) offered at Sportingbet on their team to qualify.

Having continued his goalscoring run against his former employers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is 3.75 (11/4) at Coral to do it all over again.

Blaise Matuidi, who scored that decisive goal, misses out through suspension, while captain Thiago Silva is an injury doubt. Alex and Thiago Motta are back in contention.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Sirigu – Jallet, Silva, Alex, Maxwell – Lucas, Beckham, Verratti, Pastore – Ibrahimovic, Lavezzi.
