Atletico Madrid vs Valencia preview

Valencia vs AtleticoIt is important for Atletico Madrid to win this match and thus revive their bid for the second place in the standings, but Valencia also have a lot to play for as they aim to close the gap behind Champions League places.

As the season draws to a close, los Colchoneros continue to struggle for form and it looks as though they won’t be able to break the El Clasico rivals in the La Liga standings after all.

In spite of some memorable displays in the first part of the season, Diego Simeone’s side just could not keep up with arch rivals Real Madrid, although there is still plenty of time to close that one-point gap.

However, the problem is that Atletico are far from the desired form at the moment, even if the away victory over Osasuna helped the players restore some of the lost confidence after losing at home to Real Sociedad.

Los Colchoneros now face a tricky tie against very motivated Valencia, but they are, nonetheless, 1.80 (4/5) favourites at Paddy Power to get revenge on los Che for the 2-0 defeat earlier in the season.

Everybody at the club is hoping Radamel Falcao will finally break his scoring duck, with the Colombian 2.05 (21/20) at Sportingbet to do so.

Apart from Juanfran Garcia, who misses out through suspension, Diego Simeone has fully fit squad to choose from.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Courtois – Manquillo, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis – Koke, Gabi, Mario, Arda – Falcao, Diego Costa.

These past few weeks have been very difficult for Valencia, as the team were not only eliminated from Europe, but also seriously damaged their top 4 hopes in La Liga with a three-match winless run.

This is why the match against Real Betis was extremely important, and credit to Ernesto Valverde’s men for stepping up the plate and recording a 3-0 win.

Valencia, nevertheless, remain two points behind Champions League places, meaning they have no choice but to go for a win at Vicente Calderon.

However, with several important players missing the trip to Madrid, there is little value in odds of 5.00 (4/1) offered at BetFred on away win.

Nelson Valdez is set to deputize for star striker Roberto Soldado, who has failed to recover from injury, while Jeremy Mathieu is again set to be used as a centre-back.

Sofiane Feghouli and Adil Rami miss out through suspension, whereas Victor Ruiz is not yet ready to return from injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Alves – Pereira, R. Costa, Mathieu, Guardado – Parejo, A. Costa – Canales, Banega, Jonas – Valdez.
