Getafe vs Atletico Madrid preview

Atletico Madrid vs GetafeGetafe’s six-match unbeaten run will be put to a serious test when they take on local rivals Atletico Madrid, who are not exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment.

Los Azulones have long ago established themselves as a top table side, but the team never quite managed to make that final push and join the race for European places.

Following a seven-match winless run that lasted until the end of January, it looked as though it would be same old for Luis Garcia’s side, but the team then went on to pick up 17 points from next 8 league fixtures to return into contention for European places.

After bringing a valuable point from Estadio Benito Villamarin, Getafe are just four and five points adrift of Europa League and Champions League places, which should be enough incentive to try and beat out-of-form Atletico Madrid.

Having won last four league matches at their Coliseum Alfonso Perez, los Azulones are 3.80 (14/5) at BetVictor to make it five in a row.

Boss Luis Garcia was unfortunate to have no less than three players pick up injuries against Real Betis, with Rafa Lopez ruled out, Sergio Escudero doubtful and Ahmed Barrada shaking off a knock to start against Atletico.

The good news is full-back Juan Valera has recovered from injury, but Miguel Torres, Moya and Mane all remain sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Codina – Valera, Alexis, Fernandez, Escudero – Borja, Xavi Torres – Pedro Lopez, Barrada, Diego Castro – Adrian Colunga.

It is perfectly clear that the hectic schedule has taken the wind out of team’s sails as this is not the same Atletico that were outclassing their opponents with ease in the first part of the season.

The poor form of star striker Radamel Falcao has got something to do with team’s under-par results, but the Colombian cannot be the only one to blame for the dip in form.

While the Colombian is struggling, his striker partner Diego Costa is doing brilliantly up front, even if he is not scoring as many goals as he would have liked.

If Atletico Madrid are to improve on the run that saw them win just one of last five games, they will need both strikers to perform at a good level, and the race with Real Madrid for the second place in the standings should give the players plenty of motives to get back to winning ways.

Los Colchoneros are unbeaten in last five away matches, and that is one of the reasons why they are 2.10 (11/10) at Paddy Power to triumph over Getafe.

Key midfielder Arda Turan continues to miss out, but Tiago and Juanfran Garcia return from injury and suspension respectively.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Courtois – Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Filipe Luis – Koke, Gabi, Mario, Raul Garcia – Costa, Falcao.
