Real vs AtleticoIt is only fair that El Derbi madrileno decides the winner of the race for the second place in the standings, with Real Madrid taking a three-point advantage to Vicente Calderon.

Atletico Madrid hope to take advantage of their opponents’ preoccupation with the Champions League clash against Borussia and end their 14-year wait for a win in Madrid derby.

This is the first season after quite a while that los Colchoneros have a realistic chance of finishing above their arch rivals and this goes to show how much Diego Simeone’s side have progressed over the last couple of years.

Atletico are also set to battle Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, so at least one triumph over the star-studded los Blancos squad would be much appreciated.

Back to back draws against Valencia and Getafe were seen as major setbacks, but los Colchoneros returned to the right track by hammering Granada and bringing maximum points from Seville.

Having kept three straight clean sheets in the league, the hosts have reason for optimism ahead of the clash with Real, and they are 2.80 (9/5) at William Hill to finally defeat their bitter rivals.

Diego Simeone can again count on star striker Diego Costa, who has had his yellow card against Sevilla overturned, but Arda Turan is unlikely to recover in time for the high-profile clash.

With Radamel Falcao having rediscovered his scoring touch by bagging four goals in last four matches, the Colombian is 2.25 (5/4) at Sportingbet to score at anytime.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Courtois – Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Filipe Luis – Koke, Mario, Gabi, Rodriguez – Falcao, Costa.

This match comes at a bad time for Real Madrid, with los Blancos having just been dealt with a major blow to their hopes of winning La Decima.

Los Blancos suffered a 4-1 defeat to Borussia in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie, meaning they have a mountain to climb before the return leg next Tuesday.

With the European campaign obviously a priority at the moment, Jose Mourinho will be tempted to rest some of his key men at Vicente Calderon, although that does not mean los Blancos will not be looking to continue their amazing run in the Madrid derby.

In spite of the circumstances,. Real Madrid are 2.65 (33/20) favourites with Betfair to cement the second place in the standings with three points from this match.

Jose Mourinho will have Alvaro Arbeloa back from European suspension, but Marcelo is out and Michael Essien is doubtful.

Should the Special One opt for wholesale changes to the squad, Casemiro, Nacho and Carvalho are all expected to start.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Lopez – Arbeloa, Albiol, Carvalho, Nacho – Modric, Casemiro – Callejon, Kaka, Ronaldo – Benzema.
