Milan vs Napoli preview

Napoli vs MilanThis may not be a potential title-decider as at least one of the teams would have hoped for before the season started, but there will be a lot to play for when Napoli take on Milan at Stadio San Paolo.

The fact is the Rossoneri are well adrift of the Serie A leaders Juventus with just seven games to go, but that doesn’t mean that Max Allegri’s side shouldn’t be congratulated for their achievements this term.

Milan overcame numerous departures in the summer, dismal start to the season and huge selection problems to climb to third place in the league standings, and they now have a chance to stake their claim for the second position as well.

While doing themselves proud with their Champions League showings, the Rossoneri have been absolutely brilliant in Serie A ever since mid November and the 2-2 draw at Stadio San Paolo.

The team have since won 13 of 18 league games, losing only to Roma away, and no wonder they are 2.10 (11/10) favourites with Coral to see off Napoli as well.

The hosts are without suspended Mario Balotelli, but you may remember that he was also missing when Milan recorded the memorable 2-0 victory over Barcelona.

Nigel de Jong is a long-term casualty, whereas captain Massimo Ambrosini is doubtful and Giampaolo Pazzini is set to start up front.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Abbiati – Abata, Mexes, Zapata, De Sciglio – Flamini, Montolivo, Muntari – Boateng, Pazzini, El Shaarawy.

Even if many doubted the Azzurri would be able to hold on to their key players in the summer, they not only proved the doubters wrong, but also added few more quality footballers to their ranks.

As a result, they were able to mount a serious title challenge in Serie A, although they would have liked to have done better in the other two competitions entered.

Being nine-points adrift of leaders Juventus, Napoli do look to be out of the title chase at the moment, but they are determined to push their more illustrious opponents all the way, while securing the second place in the standings.

The victory over in-form Milan would get them closer to both of their objectives, so bear in mind away win pays 3.80 (14/5) at William Hill.

Edinson Cavani ended his excellent goalscoring run as he missed a penalty against Genoa, but the Uruguayan is 2.50 (3/2) at Ladbrokes to score at San Siro.

Walter Mazzarri can choose from a fully fit squad, while it appears that Gokhan Inler has lost his starting berth to free-scoring Blerim Dzemaili.

Probable starting line-up (3-4-1-2): De Sanctis – Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Gamberini – Maggio, Behrami, Dzemaili, Zuniga – Hamsik – Cavani, Pandev.
