Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund preview

Bayern vs Borussia DortmundAfter Borussia Dortmund recorded a 5-2 victory in the 2011/2012 DFB Pokal final, Bayern Munich have been given a perfect opportunity to get revenge on their arch rivals, even if this is only a quarter-final clash.

The Millionaires, on the other hand, need to show they are still the team to beat in Germany, seeing they are no less than 17 points behind their next opponents in the Bundesliga standings.

Last season proved to be a major disappointment for the Bavarians, as they not only lose the Champions League final at home to Chelsea, but were beaten by Borussia to both league and cup titles.

Things are going much better this term, with Bayern already securing the league title, while impressing on other fronts as well.

Comfortable victory over Arsenal at the Emirates proved Jupp Heynckes’ side are again one of the main favourites for the Champions League trophy, but they also need to beat Borussia in the DFB Pokal match if they are to remain in the running for three major trophies.

Ladbrokes has the Bavarians at 1.75 (3/4) to see off their fierce rivals, with Mario Mandzukic 1.91 (10/11) at SkyBet to score at any time.

Arjen Robben will finally get his chance to shine seeing that Franck Ribery misses out through suspension, while Javi Martinez and Daniel van Buyten have both resumed full training.

This means that apart from Holger Badstuber, boss Jupp Heynckes has absolutely no selection problems.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Lahm, Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba – Martinez, Schweinsteiger – Muller, Kroos, Robben – Mandzukic.

Borussia Dortmund may not be as impressive as they were last season, but we cannot really say that this season is proving to be a failure.

While it was not realistic to expect the Millionaires to win the third league title in a row, they look on course to finish just behind their bitter rivals and ensure another season of Champions League football.

It is exactly in Europe that Dortmund have been outstanding this term, winning the group of death ahead of Real Madrid and then earning a credible 2-2 draw in Donetsk in the first knockout round.

With the return leg against Shakhtar a week from now, Jurgen Klopp and his men can fully focus on the DFB Pokal match against Bayern Munich and attempt to eliminate the Bavarians for the second time in a row.

That will be no easy task, but the talented coach was certainly right when he said that Borussia were one of just a few sides that could beat Bayern. BVB are 3.00 (2/1) at Paddy Power to qualify for the semi-finals.

Dortmund will have Robert Lewandowski back from suspension, while Mats Hummels and Jakub Blaszczykowski return from injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Weidenfeller – Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer – Bender, Gundogan – Blaszczykowski, Gotze, Reus – Lewandowski.
