Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich preview

Bayern vs BayerThis will be no derby in the true sense of the word as Bayer sit no less than 21 points behind their next opponents in the league standings, but they will see this game as an opportunity to make amends for the weekend’s defeat to Mainz.

The Bavarians may be through to the Champions League quarter-finals, but Jupp Heynckes will certainly demand a response from his players after the embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Bayer Leverkusen have done well to remain near the top of the Bundesliga standings for several years now, which was by no means easy given that clubs like Hamburg, Stuttgart, Werder and Wolfsburg were all unable to keep up with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Last season’s fifth-place finish was club’s worst in quite a while, but they have since managed to return to the right track.

Thanks to some very good displays, Bayer have succeeded in cementing the third place in the league standings, and being just one point behind Borussia Dortmund, they will attempt to finish the league campaign above the reigning champions.

After winning seven of last eight home games in Bundesliga, Bayer are 5.00 (4/1) at Coral to extend their excellent run against leaders Bayern.

Karim Bellarabi misses out through injury, while Omer Toprak is unlikely to start as he battles a knee problem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Leno – Carvajal, Wollscheid, Schwaab, Kadlec – L. Bender, Reinartz, Rolfes – Castro, Kiessling, Shurrle.

Following the very unfortunate defeat to Chelsea in last year’s Champions League final, Bayern were almost eliminated from Europe’s elite competition for the second year running despite completely outclassing Arsenal.

Despite playing fairly well in the return leg, the Bavarians should not have allowed their opponents to get back into the tie after winning 3-1 in London, but they somehow ended up qualifying for the next stage.

Seeing that the midweek defeat ended team’s 11-match winning run, there is a good chance the players will be very motivated to return to winning ways, while boss Jupp Heynckes will also demand to see an improvement after the Arsenal game.

Despite being 20 points clear at the top of league standings, Bayern will give their best to win at Bay Arena, so bear in mind away win pays 1.80 (4/5) at bet365.

Boss Heynckes will have Bastian Schweinsteiger and Jerome Boateng back from suspension, while Franck Ribery could also recover from injury.

There is unlikely to be a lot of changes to the side that played in midweek, although Mario Gomez is expected to start up front.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Lahm, van Buyten, Dante, Alaba – Martinez, Schweinsteiger – Muller, Kroos, Robben – Gomez.
