Wolfsburg vs Borussia M’gladbach

Wolfsburg aim to end their four-match losing run in Bundesliga with a victory over bottom-placed Borussia M’gladbach, even though they have a lot of problems at the moment. Die Fohlen, on the other hand, closed the gap behind safety to four points as they beat Schalke and they now hope to take at least one point from Volkswagen Arena.

Four defeats in a row

After winning the Bundesliga title two years ago, Wolsfburg have constantly been on the downtrend and they are now in a position to fight for their lives. The Wolves recovered well from three starting defeats in the league as they won four of the next seven games, but they then embarked on a dismal run that still lasts, having won just one of last fourteen games. After losing last four league games, Wolves sit on the brink of the relegation zone and they desperately need a victory in this match. Everybody can see that the team have much more potential than they are showing and it is just a matter of time before they came good, so I really believe this can be the match when they turn it around. With players like Diego, Schafer, Hasebe and Helmes in the side, Wolfsburg should have enough in them to beat bottom-placed Borussia.

Simon Kjaer and Mario Mandzukic return to the side after missing the defeat to Freiburg, while Patrick Helmes will be fit to play after shaking off a minor knock. However, Grafite, Josue and Diego Benaglio are out with injuries, but they should all be ready for next week’s game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lucien Favre enjoys a dream debut

After recording the 6:3 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the second round of the season, few could have predicted Borussia would soon slip to the relegation zone, but that was exactly what happened after the team took just two points from next eight league games. Borussia then recorded a couple of good results before embarking on the six-match losing run that saw them slip to the bottom place in the standings. After few more poor results coach Michael Frontzeck was sacked with Lucien Favre arriving to the bench. The Swiss coach had a dream debut as his side beat Schalke in his first game in charge, but Die Fohlen, nonetheless, stay in a very difficult position as they are four points adrift of safety. Unlike Wolfsburg, who are clearly playing below expectations, Borussia don’t look capable of surviving this season and they are unlikely to get something from this match.

Igor De Camargo returns from suspension, but Marc Andre ter Stegen and Jean-Sebastien Jaures remain sidelined. Key midfielder Marco Reus is doubtful with a bruised heel.

Verdict

Both sides are struggling at the moment, but Wolfsburg definitely have more space for improvement and the Wolves do look capable of winning this game. Things won’t be easy for the hosts after four straight defeats, but I still believe they can take all three points.
