Granada vs Mallorca

By: Nemanja Lazarevic

Granada hope to return to winning ways after back to back defeats to Barcelona and Celta Vigo, and make a giant step towards La Liga survival with three points from this match. Mallorca, on the other hand, are seven points adrift of safety, and this could be their last chance to keep their survival hopes alive.

Granada back in business

If teams were awarded points for performances rather than results, Granada would now be safely tucked away in mid table and fighting for a top half finish. However, given that team’s impressive showings were not always properly rewarded, the reality is los Rojiblancos are still very much involved in the relegation tussle. Nevertheless, boosted by the heavy winter recruitment, Granada have been showing a lot of potential of late and they should have no problems staying alive. Following back to back wins over Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna, los Rojiblancos looked really good in narrow defeats to Barcelona and Celta Vigo, so it is perfectly clear the team are on top of their game at the moment. This is enough to suggest that Granada should be able to beat out-of-sorts Mallorca and get further away from the bottom three.

Allan Nyom misses out through suspension, whilst Dani Benitez and Fran Rico are not yet ready to return from injury.

Last chance saloon

In all fairness, I really don’t know how Mallorca have managed to avoid the drop during the last few years, but it appears that La Liga survival has become mission impossible this season. Even if the club officials worked hard to sign new players in the summer, they have failed to find proper replacements for key players Ivan Ramis and Gonzalo Castro, who had left a big gap to fill. As a result, the Islanders have been struggling from the very start to the league campaign, and they now sit no less than seven points adrift of safety. Having picked up just one point from last seven league fixtures, and lost last four matches on the road, Mallorca don’t have much to hope for ahead of the clash with in-form Granada. Given the circumstances, the defeat at Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes is likely to put the final nail in their coffin.

Javi Marquez returns from suspension, but Pedro Geromel, Antonio Lopez, Pedro Bigas, Joao Victor and Arizmendi miss out through injury.

Verdict

Granada have been playing some great football of late and they have an excellent chance to significantly improve their survival chances by beating struggling Mallorca. The Islanders will be under huge pressure after such a dismal run of results and that is unlikely to help their cause at Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.
