Kompany VermaelenBelgium could be without two important defenders in the Last 16 stage match against United States, coach Marc Wilmots has revealed.

Thomas Vermaelen and Vincent Kompany were both rated doubtful for Tuesday’s fixture, but it has now been revealed that the Arsenal defender will not be able to recover in time.

“The situation with Thomas is that he will not be able to play but there’s a high chance he’ll be back for the last eight, if we make it,” Wilmots told reporters in Brazil.

“He’s already running and training fully with the rest of the squad, but he’ll have to wait for us to reach the last eight.”

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany remains an injury doubt, although there is a chance he could start against the United States.

“We don’t know if he’ll be ready for USA. He’ll be training with us for an hour and a half (on Monday evening) at the stadium and we’ll see how he is after that. But then we’ll wait until the morning before taking a decision.”

In spite of winning all three group fixtures, Belgium did not impress at the 2014 World Cup, but they have been made 2.00 (1/1) favourites to win in regular time.
