Milan vs Barcelona preview

Milan vs BarcelonaAll eyes will be on San Siro come Wednesday evening as new-look AC Milan attempt to put a dent into Barcelona’s title bid.

The Rossoneri have already gotten used to playing the Catalans in the Champions League knockout stages, having faced them in the quarter-finals last term.

Despite losing the tie 3-1 on aggregate, the Italian giants held their more illustrious opponents to a goalless draw in the first leg at San Siro, and I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t mind repeating the result this time out.

The problem is the likes of Nesta, Seedorf, Ibrahimovic and Pato are no longer there, although youngsters El Shaarawy, Niang and Barca’s own Bojan will give their best to earn a decent result ahead of the return leg.

Mario Balotelli is cup-tied, which is certainly a big blow for Max Allegri, and that is one of the reasons why home win pays as much as 7.00 (6/1) at bet365.

Milan, nonetheless, go into this game in confident mood, after winning four of their last five fixtures, and they are 1.67 (2/3) with Stan James to score at least one goal.

Stephan El Shaarawy is likely to start after recovering from a knee problem, while Massimo Ambrosini returns from a domestic ban.

Nigel de Jong and Robinho continue to miss out, but Philippe Mexes and Ignazio Abate are both expected to start.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Abbiati – Abate, Mexes, Zapata, De Sciglio – Nocerino, Montolivo, Ambrosini – Boateng, Pazzini, El Shaarawy.

Barcelona may have virtually secured the La Liga trophy, but this season is not going to be considered a success unless the Catalans lift the Champions League title as well.

Last term they were stopped in the semi-finals by Chelsea, after seeing off Milan in the quarter-finals, and they are now again pitted against the Rossoneri.

The Catalans obviously remain hot favourites to go through, as witnessed by the odds of 1.14 (1/7) offered at Paddy Power on Barca to qualify.

However, the match against very talented Milan side is unlikely to be a walk in the park, even if the hosts will be without Mario Balotelli.

Tito Vilanova’s assistant Jordi Roura fielded a very strong line-up in weekend’s match against Granada, but it was Leo Messi who once again saved the day with his brace and ensured his teammates enter this match high on confidence.

With Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and Jordi Alba set to return to the starting line-up, Barcelona look a good bet to triumph at San Siro, with Paddy Power paying 1.57 (4/7) on away win.

David Villa is not yet ready to return after spending some time in hospital, while Adriano Correia misses out with a muscle problem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Valdes – Alves, Pique, Puyol, Alba – Xavi, Busquets, Fabregas – Pedro, Messi, Iniesta.
