Milan vs Lazio preview

March 1, 2013
By: Nemanja Lazarevic

Lazio v AC MilanThe two sides may not have been able to mount a serious title challenge, but they are now locked in the battle for the final Champions League berth.

With Milan just two points behind their next opponents, we should see a highly entertaining encounter at San Siro.

This season had a pretty poor start for Milan, which was pretty much expected following numerous departures in the summer, but the Rossoneri have since managed to turn things around.

Max Allegri, one of the most criticized coaches in Italian football, not only managed to get his side back in the top 3 race, but also masterminded a magnificent Champions League victory over Barcelona that is likely to see the San Siro outfit qualify for the quarter-finals.

Milan were unfortunate not to continue the winning run in Derby della Madonnina, having completely outplayed arch rivals Inter, but that is nothing a win over Lazio would not make right.

Online bookmakers seem to agree that the Rossoneri are the hot favourites here, with Ladbrokes paying just 1.70 (7/10) on home win.

Having scored at least two goals in every one of their last seven home fixtures, Milan are 1.80 (4/5) with Sportingbet to continue the trend.

The hosts could face some problems at the back now that Philippe Mexes is suspended, especially as Nigel de Jong, Daniele Bonera and Didac Vila remain sidelined.

Robinho and Mathieu Flamini have both resumed full training, but Mario Balotelli is doubtful with a knee problem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Abbiati – Abate, Zaccardo, Zapata, De Sciglio – Flamini, Montolivo, Muntari – Boateng, Balotelli, El Shaarawy.

Unlike Milan, Lazio enjoyed a pretty good start to the season and the Biancocelesti have been showing no signs of slowing down.

Vladimir Petkovic’s team remain in the driving seat for an assault on the third-place finish, while they also did well to qualify for Europa League Last 16 stage.

The Stadio Olimpico outfit did suffer a small dip in form some few weeks ago, winning just one of eight games in all competitions, but they have since returned to the right track.

Back to back wins over Borussia M’gladbach and Pescara helped the players restore some of the lost confidence, meaning they enter the derby game in good spirits.

Lazio have coped really well with the absence of star striker Miroslav Klose, given that both Sergio Floccari and Libor Kozak have been in impressive form, and with that in mind, you should know the Biancocelesti are 6.00 (5/1) with bet365 to triumph at San Siro.

Sergio Floccari is expected to shake off a knee injury and start this match, but Stefano Mauri, Abdoulay Konko, Miroslav Klose and Christian Brocchi are definitely out.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Marchetti – Pereirinha, Biava, Dias, Radu – Ledesma – Candreva, Gonzalez, Hernanes, Lulic- Floccari.
