Manchester United vs Real Madrid preview

Real Madrid vs Manchester UnitedWhat a way this will be for Ryan Giggs to make his 1,000th appearance in Manchester United jersey, with his side battling European powerhouses Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 stage clash.

Los Blancos arrive at Old Trafford full of confidence after two El Clasico wins and looking to spoil the party for the effervescent Welshman.

This season is proving to be quite a success for the Red Devils, who are cruising in both Premier League and FA Cup, but they could make it even better by reaching the final stages of the Champions League.

That will be no easy task with red-hot Real Madrid hoping to eliminate United from the competition, although the English side are certainly in a good position to qualify following the 1-1 draw at Santiago Bernabeu.

United have since won all three fixtures on domestic stage, making sure they go into this all-important match high on confidence, but online bookmakers don’t seem to think they are the favourites to go through.

Home win pays 3.30 (23/10) at William Hill, whilst Man Utd are 2.30 (13/10) with Betfair to make it to the quarter-finals.

Sir Alex Ferguson is sweating over the fitness of Phil Jones, who was absolutely amazing in the first leg, but it appears that an ankle injury will get the best of him.

Rio Ferdinand is set to return after he was rested at the weekend, whereas Jonny Evans looks set to be preferred to Nemanja Vidic once again.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): De Gea – Rafael, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra – Cleverley, Carrick – Welbeck, Rooney, Kagawa – Van Persie.

Just few weeks ago it looked as though this would be a very disappointing season for Real Madrid, seeing they were on the verge of Champions League and Copa del Rey elimination, with the La Liga title long gone.

However, los Blancos have turned things around quickly, beating Barcelona in the return leg of Copa del Rey to reach the competition final, before further boosting their confidence by defeating their arch rivals in the league as well.

As a result, the players are brimming with confidence ahead of the return leg against Manchester United and maybe it is not surprising they are 1.75 (3/4) favourites at BetVictor to qualify for the quarter-finals.

BetFred has them at 2.30 (13/10) to win at Old Trafford, with Cristiano Ronaldo 2.00 (1/1) at Coral to score at any time.

Jose Mourinho will have his star players back after they were rested in the league El Clasico, while Iker Casillas is also in the squad, although he is unlikely to start.

Full-back Marcelo returns into contention, but he continues to play second fiddle to former Benfica star Fabio Coentrao.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Lopez – Arbeloa, Ramos, Varane, Coentrao – Alonso, Khedira – Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo – Higuain.
