Espanyol vs Athletic Bilbao preview

Espanyol vs AthleticHigh-flying Espanyol will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five games when they play host to Athletic Bilbao, another team that have largely impressed in the opening exchanges.

Los Periquitos did brilliantly to recover from the dismal start to last season and they were even in the position to fight for European places, albeit achieving 13th place finish eventually.

The club chiefs could do little to prevent important players Joan Verdu, Jordi Amat, Juan Forlin and Wakaso Mubarak from leaving, and having failed to sign proper replacements, many believe another difficult campaign was on the cards.

However, Espanyol largely impressed in the opening exchanges, defeating Valencia and Granada while sharing spoils with Celta and Real Betis to climb to sixth in La Liga.

And even if Javier Aguirre’s side are unlikely to remain there for much longer, they need to take advantage of the good run and pick up as many points as possible before things start taking a turn for the worse.

And while Espanyol clearly face a tough task against in-form Athletic, you should know home win pays 2.45 (29/20) at BetVictor.

Victor Alvarez has recovered from a heart surgery, but he is unlikely to return just yet, while there are no other worries for Javier Aguirre.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Casilla – J. Lopez, Colotto, Moreno, Fuentes – D. Lopez, V. Sanchez – Simao, Pizzi, Lanzarote – Garcia.

With Ernesto Valverde replacing legendary coach Marcelo Bielsa and the team moving to New San Mames Stadium, this was always going to be an important season for the club.

Having seen few more high-profile players leave this summer, the club chiefs made an extra effort to reinforce the squad, winning the race for long-term target Benat, while also adding Kike Sola, Mikel Rico and Iago Herrerin to their ranks.

However, with the backbone staying virtually the same, los Leones kicked off the season in great manner, defeating Real Valladolid, Osasuna and Celta, and only losing to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Given the players are brimming with confidence after winning their first ever match at the new stadium, there may be some value in odds of 3.10 (21/10) offered at Betfred on away win.

Last year’s top scorer Aritz Aduriz has yet to register a goal this term and he is 3.00 (2/1) with 888sport to open his account at Cornella El Prat.

With Mikel Balenziaga, Kike Sola and Borja Ekiza still sidelined, Ernesto Valverde is unlikely to make major changes to the side that defeated Celta Vigo.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Iago – Iraola, Gurpegui, San Jose, Laporte – Herrera, Iturraspe, Benat – Susaeta, Aduriz, Muniain.
