Athletic Bilbao vs Celta Vigo preview

New San MamesWhile a victory in this match would not see either of the side seriously improve their league position, cementing a top 6 place after four rounds would be quite an achievement for both Athletic and Celta.

This fixture will also mark the opening of New San Mames Stadium, which should be quite an occasion for los Leones.

Last season was by no means successful for Athletic Bilbao, with some disappointing performances hardly the perfect way to send iconic San Mames to history.

However, this season marks the beginning of new era for the club, and los Leones have so far done brilliantly to start this new chapter on a high note.

Buoyed by the arrival of Benat Etxebarria, Athletic enjoyed a bright start to the season, recording back to back wins over Real Valladolid and Osasuna, before giving a good account of themselves in the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu.

After playing the Osasuna match at Real Sociedad’s Anoeta, los Leones will play their first ever match at the New San Mames, and they are 1.73 (8/11) with Paddy Power to open the new ground with a victory.

Borja Ekiza, Kike Sola and Mikel Balenziaga remain sidelined through injury, but Iker Muniain is available after returning from international duty.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Iraizoz – Iraola, Gurpegui, Laporte, Saborit – Herrera, Iturraspe, Benat – Susaeta, Aduriz, Muniain.

Having survived the previous league campaign by winning on the final day of the season, Celta Vigo were hoping to ensure survival much earlier this term.

Former Roma boss Luis Enrique was handed the reigns, while Charles, Rafinha, Fontas and Nolito were brought to replace Aspas, De Lucas and Park.

And while Celta have yet to win at home, having shared spoils with Espanyol and Granada, it was the away triumph over Real Betis that saw them climb to seventh place in the standings.

The Sky Blues will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run against Athletic, but that is easier said than done at the moment.

Luis Enrique will have important midfielder Borja Oubina back from suspension, while Santi Mina is also back in contention.

However, key winger Michael Krohn-Dehli is out with a muscle injury, whereas Andres Tunez has left the club to join Beitar Jerusalem.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Yoel – Mallo, Cabral, Fontas, Aurtenetxe – Oubina, Lopez, Rafinha – Fernandez, Charles, Nolito.
