Manchester City attacking midfielder Jack Grealish has criticised the section of fans who booed Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire against the Ivory Coast.
Maguire, who is having a tough time at United at club level, was in action for England in the friendly international against the Ivory Coast at Wembley Stadium in London on Tuesday evening.
A section of the England fans booed when the former Leicester City centre-back’s name was read out before the game and then jeered him when he touched the ball.
Grealish told Sky Sports: “Personally I think it’s ridiculous. Even tonight he was brilliant. Our first two goals, first one him driving out with ball, second one driving a bit and passing to Ollie. Not every centre-back can have those qualities.
“He’s been a fantastic servant for his country and it’s ridiculous for him to get booed. It wasn’t something the team liked. Harry’s a strong-minded person. His performance tonight will have done him the world of good. It will only spur him on. It’s not nice to hear but you’ve got a job to do.
“We had a brilliant relationship with the supporters last year at the Euros and we need to keep it like that into the World Cup.”
England have already qualified for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar later in the year and are rated at 7/1 on Betfair to win the competition.
