Roma vs Lazio preview

Lazio vs RomaRoma go into Derby della Capitale from joint first place in the standings having won first three league matches and no doubt they will be looking to keep their 100% record intact.

Lazio did well to win two of their three opening fixtures, but this is the match where the Biancocelesti need to prove they can mix it up with Italy’s top sides.

After Luis Enrique, Zdenek Zeman and Aurelio Andreazzoli all failed to turn Roma into genuine top 3 contenders, it was Rudi Garcia’s turn.

The new boss had some rebuilding to do after Erik Lamela, Marquinhos, Maartek Stekelenburg and Pablo Osvaldo were sold, but the club management did a great job by adding Ljajic, Strootman, Gervinho, Benatia, Maicon and De Sanctis to their ranks.

Even so, many were surprised to see Roma become one of just two sides to have won their first three Serie A fixtures, and this excellent start speaks volumes about Rudi Garcia’s qualities.

Having won all three games by a two-goal margin, the Giallorossi are likely to face a tougher task against Lazio, but odds of 2.15 (23/20) offered at Paddy Power for a home win do look tempting.

Captain Francesco Totti is again set to lead the line, with the veteran forward 2.75 (7/4) to cement his hero status with a goal against arch rivals Lazio.

Federico Balzaretti is doubtful with a bruised calf, but Mattia Destro and Michael Bradley are definitely out.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): De Sanctis – Maicon, Benatia, Castan, Balzaretti – De Rossi, Strootman, Pjanic – Florenzi, Totti, Ljajic.

Lazio chiefs surprised everyone when they appointed Vladimir Petkovic as the new boss last summer, but that proved to be a good decision as the Bosnian coach has done pretty well in his first season in charge.

While showing some promise in Serie A and Europa League, the Biancocelesti lifted their first trophy after quite a while as they pipped none other than Roma to the Coppa Italia title.

And if it hadn’t been for the matches against Juventus, Lazio would have a perfect record now, having won three games this term, while suffering 4-0 and 4-1 defeats to the Bianconeri in Italian Super Cup and the league respectively.

Vladimir Petkovic managed to rest most of his starters in the 1-0 Europa League win over Legia, meaning his key men will be fresh for the short trip to Stadio Olimpico.

Even so, considering Lazio’s poor record in big matches this term, there is almost no value in odds of 3.70 (27/10) offered by BetVictor on away win.

Captain Stefano Mauri remains banned, whereas Stefan Radu, Lucas Biglia, Giuseppe Biava and Diego Novaretti are all out injured.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Marchetti – Konko, Ciani, Cana, Cavanda – Ledesma – Candreva, Gonzalez, Hernanes, Lulic – Klose.
