Napoli are reportedly attempting to bolster their defence with Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

According to Sky in Italy, the Serie A outfit are eyeing a move for the central defender on a potential free transfer.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta could be open to the move, with the Greek having entered the final year of his deal at the Emirates favour. He has also fallen considerably down the pecking order in North London.

Arsenal recently moved for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes, with William Saliba also joining up with the club this summer following confirmation of his transfer last year. There is also David Luiz, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers present at the club who are all capable of playing at centre-back.

Sokratis has been with Arsenal since a move from Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the 2018/19 season. He has made 69 appearances for the club in that time, scoring six goals. However, he has not managed to make a single start for the club since early March, hence why he could be allowed to depart the Emirates Stadium.

Should he arrive in Naples, Gennaro Gattuso will hope that he can play a part in an improved season in 2020/21. Napoli finished a lowly seventh last campaign but sit at odds of 13/1 with Paddy Power to lift the Serie A crown this season.
