Milan vs Fiorentina preview

Milan vs Fiorentina Last year’s top 3 rivals are set to square off at San Siro, with both sides hoping to make amends for the somewhat slow start to the season.

Things have not been going according to plan for the Rossoneri, who already sit huge 13 points adrift of the final Champions League berth.

The combination of selection problems and dismal performances on the road was responsible for the poor start to the season, but Max Allegri’s side were already in a similar situation last term when they eventually managed to achieve a top 3 finish.

That will prove to be a mission impossible for the Rossoneri unless they can quickly show a considerable improvement, with their latest two results certainly a cause for concern.

Following the 3-2 defeat at Ennio Tardini, Milan could only muster a 1-1 draw with out-of-sorts Lazio, meaning this is a must-win game for them.

And with their opponents missing some important players, Milan are 2.10 (11/10) to finally return to winning ways and revive their top 3 bid.

Philippe Mexes continues to miss out through suspension, but Christian Abbiati is expected to return to the side after recovering from injury.

There are no fresh selection worries for Max Allegri, but Giampaolo Pazzini, Stephan El Shaarawy, Matias Silvestre and Daniele Bonera are out injured.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-2-1): Abbiati – Abbate, Zaccardo, Zapata, De Sciglio – Montolivo, de Jong, Muntari – Kaka, Robinho – Balotelli.

It was several poor refereeing decisions that ended up costing Fiorentina the final Champions League berth, and it appears nothing has changed.

With Viola recording back to back triumphs over Juventus and Chievo to revive their Champions League ambitions, the home game against Napoli gave them a chance to make amends for several slip-ups in the opening exchanges.

And while Fiorentina largely outplayed their more illustrious opponents, they ended up losing the game 2-1, but were denied a clear penalty in injury time, with the ref instead sending off key winger Juan Cuadrado for second bookable offence.

Vincenzo Montella has thus been denied the services of arguably one of Europe’s in-form players for the crucial game against Milan, but there’s no point in crying over the spilt milk now.

The latest circumstances are likely to make Fiorentina players even more determined to prove their worth at San Siro, so away win needs to be considered at 3.75 (11/4).

Juan Cuadrado is obviously banned for the Milan game, but key defender Gonzalo Rodriguez returns from suspension.

Matias Fernandez and Massimo Ambrosini are major doubts, whereas Mario Gomez, Ahmed Hegazy and Josip Ilicic are definitely out.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Neto – Tomovic, Rodriguez, Savic, Pasqual – Aquilani, Pizarro, Valero – Joaquin, Rossi, Fernandez.
