Following the announcement by Roy Hodgson of his squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, England have been installed as a 34.0 (33/1) chance to win the tournament.

There were no real surprises in the former West Bromwich Manager’s selection, though there was no place for Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, who announced his international retirement the day before the list was released.

West Brom’s Ben Foster and Fraser Forster of Celtic will provide back up to first choice goalkeeper Joe Hart, with Norwich City’s John Ruddy one of seven players listed on standby.

In Cole’s absence, Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw of Everton and Southampton respectively are picked at left-back, with Liverpool’s Glen Johnson selected for the right hand side.

In the centre of defence, Baines’s Toffees teammate Phil Jagielka makes the cut, along with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill while Manchester United duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones offer versatility at the back.

Uncapped duo John Stones and Jon Flanagan are on the standby list after impressing for their respective Merseyside clubs.

Four of the nine midfielders come from either Everton or Liverpool, with captain Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson of the Reds and Ross Barkley from the Blue half of the city.

Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere are in, along with Manchester City’s James Milner, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Southampton captain Adam Lallana.

Manchester United pair Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick are both ready to come in should anybody drop out between now and the start of the tournament.

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge was the top scoring Englishman in the Premier League during the 2013/14 campaign, and is joined by Manchester United teammates Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney, while Southampton’s Rickie Lambert continues his remarkable rise having played in League One with Bristol Rovers just five years ago.

Jermaine Defoe, now playing in the MLS is on standby, along with West Ham United’s Andy Carroll.

England begin their campaign against Italy in Manaus on June 14th, before facing Uruguay and Costa Rica, and they can be backed to win their group at 3.25 (9/4) with William Hill.
