New Wales boss Gary Speed and his players will have a special motive in this match as England are one of their fierce rivals not only in football but in other spheres as well.

Experienced coach John Toshack resigned from the post after losing the first qualifying game to Montenegro, while caretaker boss Brian Flynn couldn’t prevent defeats to Bulgaria and Switzerland.

As a result, Wales are already out of contention for the top two places, meaning new coach Gary Speed will be looking to rebuild the squad during this qualifying campaign and prepare his side for the next one.

The hosts’ preparations for this crucial encounter were dealt with a major blow as Gareth Bale has reportedly picked up an injury in training and he is a major doubt for this clash.

Aaron Ramsey returns to the side after the lengthy injury lay-off, but Robbie Earnshaw has withdrawn through injury.

England enter this game amidst controversy over the captain’s armband, which was handed back to John Terry to the disgust of Rio Ferdinand and his fellow teammates.

After failing to beat Montenegro at home, the Three Lions have got to win this game if they want to catch Montenegro at the top, but they will not have an easy job at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand and Theo Walcott miss out, while Wolves’ Matt Jarvis will have a chance to earn his first cap.

Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney are expected to start up front, while Jack Wilshire will keep his place in the side.

England squad:
