Bayern started the Champions League campaign with an impressive 2:0 win over Villarreal at El Madrigal, but the victory did come at a cost.

Striker Mario Gomez and defender Daniel Van Buyten had to pull out through injuries and are now rated very doubtful for weekend’s clash with Schalke.

“Van Buyten has a problem with an Achilles tendon and, as we know, Mario Gomez had to pull out of the national team and he still has problems with his groin,” Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes was quoted as saying.

“I hope that it is not so bad that he cannot play on Sunday. We will just have to wait and see.”

Gomez, who bagged seven goals in last two Bundesliga games, admits he is unlikely to play at the weekend.

“In the condition I am today, then there is definitely no chance I can play. I really don’t know what is wrong.

“All I do know is that I had a lot of pain in the groin region and we have got to take a look at it. The doctor will examine me today and then tomorrow in Munich.”

After winning their last seven games in all competitions, without conceding a single goal in the process, Bayern are 3.00 (2/1) to keep a clean sheet at Veltins Arena as well.
