Euro 2012: Poland vs Russia preview

Having missed a great opportunity to start the Euro 2012 with a win against Greece, Poland have got to try and beat Russia instead.

Dick Advocaat’s side, on the other hand, can play this game in a relaxed manner following an impressive showing and a 4-1 victory over Czech Republic.

The co-hosts had high hopes before the start of the tournament and the game against Greece and everything seemed to be going according to plan when Robert Lewandowski rounded off a beautiful team move in the first quarter of the game.

Their job was made easier when their opponents had a man sent off just before the half-time break, but the hosts were unable to profit on their numerical advantage and allowed the Greeks to get back into the game.

If it hadn’t been for back-up keeper Przemyslaw Tyton, who saved Giorgios Karagounis’ penalty, Poland would have lost the game and virtually all chances to go through.

Nonetheless, the Poles can get back in contention for a place in the quarter-finals by beating Russia and they are 3.40 (14/5) with Paddy Power to do so.

Boss Smuda has revealed that he wouldn’t make more than one change to the side that shared spoils with Greece, with Kamil Grosicki likely to replace Maciej Rybus.

First choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny is suspended and he will be replaced by the penalty hero Przemyslaw Tyton.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Tyton – Piszczek, Wasilewski, Perquis, Boenisch – Murwaski, Polanski – Blaszczykowski, Obraniak, Grosicki – Lewandowski.

Russia are the biggest winners of the first round of group games and they have only themselves to thank after the amazing showing against the Czech Republic.

Even if Dick Advocaat’s side had some problems in the opening exchanges, the early goal gave them a much needed boost and the rest was history.

Russia are now hot favourites to win Group A, but they cannot afford to relax just yet as Poland will be very motivated to make amends for the opening slip-up.

Even so, the Russians look more than capable of winning this game, and you should know away win pays 2.35 (27/20) at Bodog.

Boss Advocaat is not expected to make too many changes to the starting line-up, but Roman Pavlyuchenko could come in for misfiring Alexander Kerzhakov.

Igor Akinfeev is expected to return to the side after recovering from a knee injury, with Vyacheslav Malafeev set to be dropped.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-2-1): Akinfeev – Anyukov, Ignaschevich, A. Berezutski, Zhirkov – Denisov, Zyryanov, Shirokov – Dzagoev, Arshavin – Pavlyuchenko.
