Euro 2012: Denmark vs Portugal preview

Denmark made a giant step towards the quarter-finals with a shock victory over Netherlands, but that won’t matter much if they lose to Portugal.

The Selecao desperately need a win after losing to Germany, but they could be in for a difficult task at L’viv Arena.

Had Denmark been placed in any other group at the Euro 2012, they would have been the favourites to go through, but not too many people believed they can progress to the quarter-finals after being drawn in the group of death.

Nonetheless, Morten Olsen’s side proved their worth by beating Netherlands in their opening game and they now need just few more points to reach their goal.

The Danes may have been on the back foot at times against Oranje, but their swift counterattacks and intelligent play proved enough for a valuable victory.

Once again Denmark are rated as underdogs, but after beating Portugal to the first place in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, odds of 4.30 (33/10) offered at BetVictor on home win could be worth a shot.

With no fresh injury worries to report and with a scintillating display against Oranje in mind, boss Morten Olsen is highly unlikely to make changes to his starting line-up.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Andersen – Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, S. Poulsen – Kvist, Zimling – Rommedahl, Eriksen, Krohn-Dehli – Bendtner.

Portugal may feel hard done by after the 1-0 defeat to Germany seeing that Paulo Bento’s side matched their opponents for big part of the game.

However, they missed two glorious chances to score, either side of Mario Gomez’s winner, and have nobody else to blame for the defeat but themselves.

Even so, Portugal can get back into contention for a place in the quarter-finals with three points from this match, but odds of 2.05 (21/20) offered by 888sport do not represent a real value for money.

Paulo Bento’s star man Cristiano Ronaldo was pretty quiet against Germany, so he could shine in the Denmark clash instead and the Real Madrid man is 2.95 (39/20) with Sportingbet to score at anytime.

Hugo Almeida and Ricardo Quaresma have resumed full training after recovering from a bout of flu and a muscle injury respectively, but neither is expected to start against Denmark.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Patricio – Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Coentrao – Meireles, Veloso, Moutinho – Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo.
