De Rossi missing for Italy v Spain

Daniele De Rossi ItalyItaly boss Cesare Prandelli has named a 26-man squad for the international friendly against Spain, with Roma’s Daniele De Rossi the most notable omission.

The Azzurri coach decided to leave the Roma star out after he punched Inter forward Mauro Icardi in weekend’s derby game at Stadio Olimpico.

Mario Balotelli and Pablo Osvaldo had previously been left out for similar reasons, but while the Southampton attacker is in the squad, the Milan star is missing with a shoulder problem.

Matia Destro, Mattia De Sciglio and Mattia Perin have all been recalled, whereas Sunderland’s Emanuele Giaccherini makes the squad despite struggling for form of late.

Argentine-born defender Gabriel Paletta and Torino striker Ciro Immobile have received their first ever call-ups.

Having recorded just one triumph in last twelve international friendlies, the Azzurri will certainly have something to prove when they face La Furia Roja at Estadio Vicente Calderon.

However, the fact Italy are 6.50 (11/2) to win the high-profile clash is enough to suggest the size of the task before them.

Italy squad:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Mattia Perin (Genoa), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris St Germain);

Midfielders: Antonio Candreva (Lazio), Emanuele Giaccherini (Sunderland), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (AC Milan), Thiago Motta (Paris St Germain), Marco Parolo (Parma), Andrea Pirlo (Juventus), Marco Verratti (Paris St Germain);
