Peru striker Claudio Pizarro is set to miss the Copa America tournament after picking up a knee injury in training.
The awarder striker was expected to be one of star players for Peru national team in Argentina, but he has been ruled out of the tournament having picked up a medial ligament injury.
With the Peruvian set to miss at least six weeks of action, he looks unlikely to be ready for the start of next Bundesliga season.
Werder sporting director, Klaus Alofs has confirmed that Pizarro is going to miss the start of pre-season training.
“After this diagnosis, he will not be able to take part at Copa America. Also, he is expected to miss the first training session,” Alofs was quoted as saying.
“We are in very close contact with the attending physicians on site and will decide how he is treated in the coming days when he returns to Germany.”
Peru were always considered underdogs for their opening Copa America fixture against Uruguay, but taking Pizarro’s injury into account, odds of 1.44 (4/9) offered by Sportingbet on Uruguay to claim maximum points now look too good to pass.
