Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid preview

The most interesting tie of gameweek 5 in Spanish La Liga will see mighty Barcelona play host to in-form Atletico Madrid.

After starting the season in impressive fashion, beating Porto to the European Super Cup title and hammering Villarreal in their opening La Liga game, Barcelona have suffered a big dip in form.

Pep Guardiola’s side managed to make amends for the slip ups against Racing Santander and Milan with the 8:0 win over Osasuna, but they were then completely outplayed by Valencia and were lucky to bring one point from Mestalla.

Just one win in four games is simply not good enough for arguably the best team in the world, so there are no doubts Barcelona will be very motivated to win this game and thus return to the right track.

While the Catalans are hot favourites to win this game, there is really no value in betting on home win at odds of 1.20 (1/5) offered by Ladbrokes.

Seeing that Barca recorded three 2:2 draws in last four games, backing both teams to score at 1.91 (10/11) offered by Stan James is a much better option.

Gerard Pique has resumed full training and he could be in contention for the Atletico Madrid game, but Ibrahim Afellay has been ruled out for the season after picking up a cruciate ligament injury. Alexis Sanchez remains sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Valdes – Alves, Puyol, Mascherano, Abidal – Xavi, Busquets, Fabregas – Pedro, Messi, Villa.

Atletico Madrid chiefs have invested considerable funds in the playing squad this summer, so they are certainly happy to see the team living up to the expectations.

Los Colchoneros had a pretty slow start to the domestic season as new players Falcao, Turan, Diego and others were still not at their best, but they soon managed to kick-start their season.

Europa League win over Celtic was just a sign of things to come as Atletico went on to record successive 4:0 victories over Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon, hinting that they are back in business.

In addition to the impressive scoring form, los Colchoneros have displayed an unusual strength at the back, having kept seven clean sheets in nine games this season, so they definitely have reason to hope for a good result at Camp Nou.

Having scored five goals in three league games, new signing Radamel Falcao Garcia is already starting to pay off and he is no less than 6.00 (5/1) with William Hill to score at Camp Nou as well.

Centre-back Diego Godin has finally resumed full training and he is available for selection, but Diego remains doubtful.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-1-1): Courtois – Silvio, Godin, Dominguez, Filipe Luis – Turan, Gabi, Tiago, Reyes – Diego – Falcao.
