AFCON 2013: Ethiopia vs Nigeria preview

Zambia vs NigeriaIn spite of the heavy defeat to Burkina Faso, Ethiopia are still in within a shot of a quarter-final berth, although they need to show a lot of improvement in order to beat the Super Eagles.

Nigeria were unlucky not to win any of their first two fixtures, meaning they have no choice but to try and make things right against the Walya Antelopes.

Even if Ethiopia were written off even before the tournament started, Sewnet Bishaw’s men have showed plenty of promise in their first two group games.

After holding Zambia to a 1-1 draw with ten men on the pitch, the Walya Antelopes played really well in the first period of the Burkina Faso match and missed a glorious chance to take the lead in the opening exchanges.

Ethiopia were one-goal down when the opposing keeper was sent off on the hour mark, but instead of pegging back their more illustrious opponents, they completely fell apart and ended up conceding three more goals.

Injuries to star players Adane Girma and Asrat Megersa certainly played a part in the embarrassing defeat and with neither of the two expected to feature against Nigeria, it is little wonder home win pays 10.50 (19/2) at BetVictor.

With the two star midfielders set to be sorely missed, Ethiopia clearly face a mountain to climb in their final group fixture. First choice keeper Jemal Tassew returns from suspension.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Tassew – Tesfaye, Hailu, Debebe, Bogale – Hintsa, Yared – Assefa, Bekele, Teshome – Said.

Having failed to proved their worth at last few major tournaments, Nigeria were not really seen as one of the main candidates for the title at the 2013 AFCON, but they were not as disappointing as many expected them to be.

The Super Eagles produced two promising showings and had the lead against both Burkina Faso and Zambia, only to be denied maximum points by two late goals.

While they had nobody else to blame for the last-gasp equalizer against Burkina Faso, the referee certainly played a part in their second match, having awarded Zambia a non-existent penalty.

Everything could have been different had John Obi Mikel scored from the spot in the first half, but there’s no point crying over spilt milk now.

Nigeria still hold everything in their hands, so bear in mind Ladbrokes pays 1.44 (4/9) on the Super Eagles to see off Ethiopia.

Defender Efe Ambrose returns to the side from suspension, while Joseph Yobo could also return after recovering from injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Enyeama – Ambrose, Yobo, Oboabona, Echiejile – Igiebor, Mikel, Ogude – Musa, Emenike, Moses.
