Stuttgart vs Lazio preview

Borussia M vs LazioStuttgart will attempt to avenge Borussia M’gladbach and pip Lazio to the place in the Europa League quarter-finals, with Biancocelesti hoping to eliminate the only remaining German side from the competition.

While the Swabians did well to eliminate Dynamo Moscow in Europa League qualifying stages, they had a really slow start to the group phase, picking up just two points from first three matches.

However, back to back victories over Kobenhavn and Steaua ensured they qualify for the next round despite losing their final group match to Molde.

Stuttgart then recorded a 3-1 aggregate victory over Genk to make it to the last 16 stage, but the match against Lazio will be their toughest task yet.

The team have been showing some improvement after losing their first four fixtures after the winter break, although they could have done without weekend’s defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

In spite of all the problems the Swabians are facing, online bookmakers seem to see them as favourites in the first leg, with Coral paying 2.25 (5/4) on home win.

Important defender Georg Niedermeier continues to miss out, while Tim Hoogland is also sidelined, while top scorer Vedad Ibisevic misses out through suspension.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-2-1): Ulreich – Sakai, Tasci, Rudiger, Boka – Gentner, Kvist, Holzhauser – Harnik, Traore – Macheda.

Lazio have done really well to qualify for the Europa League last 16 phase, but this is not the only competition where the team have impressed.

The Biancocelesti also reached Coppa Italia final, where they will play either Roma or Inter, and are still in the race for the top 3 finish in Serie A.

A small dip in form and the run of one win in last five league games saw the team slip from the top three for the first time after quite a while, but Lazio are now just one point behind third-placed Milan.

It was the Rossoneri who defeated Vladimir Petkovic’s side at the weekend, albeit with a big help from the referee, who had wrongfully sent off Antonio Candreva in the opening exchanges.

Lazio are, therefore, very motivated to return to winning ways ahead of the all-important clash with Fiorentina on Sunday, with away win paying 3.60 (13/5) at SkyBet.

Vladimir Petkovic is expected to field his strongest side in Stuttgart, although Miroslav Klose, Abdoulay Konko and Cristian Brocchi miss out through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Marchetti – Cana, Biava, Ciani, Radu – Ledesma – Candreva, Hernanes, Gonzalez, Lulic – Floccari.
