Fenerbahce vs Lazio preview

Fener vs Viktoria PlzenTurkish giants Fenerbahce will fancy their chances of going all the way if they can eliminate Lazio in the quarter-finals, but that is easier said than done.

The Biancocelesti have yet to lose a European fixture this season, which makes them favourites to qualify for the next round.

Not so long ago, Fenerbahce were regular in Champions League group stages and often reaching the knockout rounds, but that time looks a distant past now.

At the moment, Aykut Kocaman’s side are trailing arch rivals Galatasaray on domestic stage, while they haven’t reached Champions League group phase since 2008.

While somewhat struggling on domestic stage, Fener have done well in Europa League this term, winning the first place in what was a very difficult group before seeing off BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plzen to reach the quarter-finals.

Having also stabilized their domestic form of late, the Turkish giants are 2.38 (11/8) at Ladrbokes to win the first leg against Lazio.

The problem is they have won just two of five home games in Europa League this term, but this is a perfect opportunity for Fenerbahce to improve on that record.

As first choice right-back Gokhan Gonul misses out through suspension, midfielder Mehmet Topuz is expected to provide cover.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Demirel – Topuz, Irtegun, Korkmaz, Ziegler – Kuyt, Meireles, Cristian, Erkin – Sow, Webo.

In spite of the fairly thin squad, Lazio didn’t want to be one of those teams that do not take Europa League seriously, and it is the right approach that has helped the Bianconeri reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Serie A campaign was always a priority, but with the team having failed to remain in the race for the final Champions League berth, they are now ready to shift their focus to their European campaign.

Lazio have also made it to Coppa Italia final, so it looks as though might challenge for two major trophies for the first time after quite a while.

The Biancocelesti have been pretty impressive on European travels this season, winning three and drawing three of six away games, and they are now 3.50 (5/2) at BetVictor to win at Sukru Saracoglu.

Libor Kozak, who has already scored 10 Europa League goals this term, returns to the starting line-up, and he is 3.80 (14/5) at Sportingbet to continue his amazing run.

Miroslav Klose is closing in on full fitness, but is unlikely to start, while Sergio Floccari, Bruno Pereirinha and Abdoulay Konko all miss out.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Marchetti – Lulic, Cana, Ciani, Radu – Ledesma – Candreva, Hernanes, Onazi, Ederson – Kozak.
