Jak Alnwick NewcastleNewcastle United will ask for permission from the Premier League to sign an emergency goalkeeper ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

With both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot injured, 21-year-old Jak Alnwick was in the starting line-up against Tottenham, with Freddie Woodman, 17, on the bench.

And with Alnwick injuring his shoulder in the 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat, Alan Pardew is hoping to sign a new shot-stopper in the coming days.

“There is no way that a 17-year-old should be allowed to go in goal at Premier League level,” said Pardew.

“He (Alnwick) has an injury to his shoulder so we’re going to have to see. We will perhaps talk to the Premier League about Jak’s situation.”

Newcastle also have Karl Darlow on their books, but with the player unable to be recalled from loan, they find themselves in all sorts of problems.

Nevertheless, a Premier League spokesman has all but ruled out allowing the Magpies to sign a new goalkeeper.

“Newcastle United are not eligible to sign a goalkeeper on emergency loan as they have three fit goalkeepers on the books, Jak Alnwick, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow,” the spokesman told the Hartlepool Mail.

Injury-hit Newcastle will be hoping to return to winning ways when they host arch rivals Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, with home win paying 2.00 (1/1).
