Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has praised his side for the win against Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday evening.

Defending Spanish champions Madrid got the better of city rivals Atletico 2-1 away from home in La Liga.

Rodrygo put Los Blancos in the lead in the 18th minute, and Federico Valverde made it 2-0 on 36 minutes.

Mario Hermoso halved the deficit for Atleti in the 83rd minute and was then sent off in injury time.

Ancelotti told Madrid’s official website: “We’ve got a very competitive squad and we’ve done it without Benzema, our most important player.

“We can improve on some things, but the fact is that I can’t ask any more from this team. We’ve won every game and are really pleased. I’m proud to be coaching these players.

“We managed to play out from the back very well in the first half and both goals involved Courtois playing out.

“We were comfortable on the ball and in the second half we lost the focus of trying to cause them problems.

“We had the game under control, but we had to dig in at the end because Atlético’s goal created problems for us. Ideally you want to score lots of goals and not concede, but there’s no such thing as perfection.”

Real Madrid are at the top of the La Liga table at the moment with 18 points from six matches, two points clear of bitter rivals and second-placed Barcelona.

Last season’s UEFA Champions League winners will return to action on October 2 when they take on Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid can be backed at 8/1 on Betfair to win the La Liga match against Osasuna 3-0.
