Manchester City vs Monaco preview

If this match was played a couple of weeks back, Monaco would probably be the favourites to go through, but Man City have since returned to the right track.

In spite of weekend’s draw with Huddersfield Town, the Citizens head into the clash high on confidence, although they will have to work hard if they want to beat the Principality Club.

Pep Guardiola found the English Premier League much tougher than he had expected, and he has struggled to get the maximum out of his side.

After the bright start was followed by a big slump in form, the Citizens are finally back on track, and there is still plenty of time to save the current season.

Three successive league wins saw Man City climb to second in the Premier League standings, and even though they trail leaders Chelsea eight points, they could still mount a serious title challenge.

Following the goalless draw with Championship high-flyers Huddersfield in the FA Cup, the Citizens will get the second opportunity to make it to the quarter-finals, but now it’s time to focus on their European exploits.

Man City play host to in-form Monaco in the first leg of the Last 16 stage and even though they have been made 1.62 (5/8) favourites to claim maximum points, we expect to see a very close game.

Pep Guardiola is set to recall the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Kevin De Bruyne, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Bacary Sagna to the side, but Gabriel Jesus is out injured.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Caballero – Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov – De Bruyne, Toure, Silva – Sterling, Aguero, Sane.

Monaco are enjoying the most successful season since winning the last of their seven titles back in 2000 and they are on track to end a 17-year wait for the league trophy.

With 12 games to go, the Principality Club sit three points clear of PSG and Nice at the Ligue 1 summit, although they missed the opportunity to further increase the advantage having shared spoils with Bastia.

But, Monaco need to put their league campaign aside and focus on the Champions League clash against Manchester City, where they are priced at 3.00 (2/1) to progress to the next stage.

Leonardo Jardim’s side won two of their last three fixtures in the competition, while they boast a 1-1-1 away record this season, with 2-1 away triumph over Tottenham the highlight of their campaign.

The Portuguese coach will have Andrea Raggi back from domestic suspension, while Fabinho and Djibril Sidibe will be recalled.

There have been no fresh injury worries at Stade Louis II, but Guido Carrillo and Boschilia are unlikely to make the trip to the UK.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Subasic – Sidibe, Glik, Jemerson, Mendy – Bernardo Silva, Fabinho, Bakayoko, Lemar – Falcao, Germain.
