Tottenham vs Milan

Tottenham produced quite a coup by winning 1:0 at San Siro, but Spurs fully deserved the victory and are now hoping to finish the job and make it to the next round. Milan enter the game riddled with selection problems, although the attacking potential the Rossoneri possess and their wealth of experience give them some reason for hope.

Can Spurs do it?

The first match at San Siro showed just how much this team had progressed under Harry Redknapp with Spurs pulling off a major surprise and creating advantage before the return leg. That game proved that Tottenham’s game can be result oriented when needed, but we can no expect a completely different approach at White Hart Lane. Tottenham are one of the rare teams that play their own game at home regardless of the opponent and as Harry Redknapp already suggested, Spurs will attack Milan at the Lane despite the one-goal advantage. With Milan missing quite a few key defenders and holding midfielders, Redknapp is aware that his side will have a great chance of winning the game if they attack the more illustrious opponent, and there is no doubt we will again see attack-minded Tottenham. With Lennon and Bale pitted against Abate and veteran Jankulovski, the hosts should have a big advantage on the wing positions.

Gareth Bale and Rafa van der Vaart should be fit to play, while Lennon, Palacios and Crouch could return after being rested against Wolves. Corluka, King, Woodgate, Huddlestone and Kaboul remain sidelined.

Big problems for Milan

When Milan picked their January signings, the Rossoneri were clearly thinking about the Serie A campaign with Antonio Cassano, Mark van Bommel and Urby Emanuelson proving to be a big asset in team’s push for the Serie A title, but now the trio will not be able to help Maxi Allegri’s side in the Champions League clash with Tottenham, which only adds to the worries. The Rossoneri have been really impressive on domestic stage and they look likely to win the Serie A title, but they failed to prove their potential in the first leg against Tottenham, meaning they now face an uphill task at White Hart Lane. Considering the result from the first leg and the availability of players like Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Pato, Milan have no choice but to try and score a couple of goals in London, but their back line certainly doesn’t look capable of stopping high-flying Spurs.

The Rossoneri will have major problems in midfield with Cassano, van Bommel and Emanuelson ineligible, Gattuso suspended and Pirlo, Ambrosini and Boateng missing through injuries. Alexandre Pato should be fit to play after recovering from a bout of flu.

Verdict

Considering the attacking potential the two teams possess, we are bound to see goals at San Siro, especially as usually defence-minded Milan will have to attack. I still see Tottenham as favourites to win this game, but backing both teams to score looks like the best option here.
