AC Milan vs Arsenal preview

Arguably the most interesting tie of the Champions League last 16 stage will see Serie A champions Milan and English giants Arsenal battle for the place in the quarter-finals.

Considering the selection problems boss Maxi Allegri has been facing this season, Milan have done remarkably well this season.

The Rossoneri had no problems securing their place in Champions League knockout stages, whereas they also managed to stay in the race for the Serie A title.

Derby win over Udinese saw Milan finally climb to the top of the standings, although their rivals Juventus have two games in hand and could have returned to the top by the time this game starts.

The 2-1 win over very good Udinese side certainly served as a big confidence boost for the players, so there looks to be a good value in betting on home win, at odds of 2.10 (11/10) offered by bet365.

New signings Maxi Lopez and Djamel Mesbah as well as Stephan El Shaarawy have been added to Milan’s Champions League squad so as to ease the unbelievable injury crisis.

Alessandro Nesta, Alexandre Pato, Alberto Aquilani, Mathieu Flamini, Mario Yepes, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Alexander Merkel and Christian Abbiati remain sidelined, whereas Sulley Muntari, Gennaro Gattuso and Antonio Cassano are ineligible.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-1-2): Amelia – Abate, Thiago Silva, Mexes, Mesbah – Nocerino, Van Bommel, Ambrosini – Seedorf – Ibrahimovic, Robinho.

This is already looking like a pretty disappointing season for Arsenal, although the Gunners still have enough time to turn it into a success.

Just like his Milan counterpart, Arsene Wenger was forced to deal with numerous selection worries, but the Frenchman should be used to this by now.

His side recovered well from the dismal start to the season and they easily ensured their place in the Champions League knockout stages, whereas the Gunners showed improvement in the Premier League as well.

Loan signing from New York Red Bulls Thierry Henry helped Arsenal climb to the fourth place in the standings by scoring a winner against Sunderland, but he is again set to start on the bench.

However, after scoring against both Blackburn and Sunderland after coming off the bench, Henry is 3.80 (14/5) with Sportingbet to score at San Siro as well.

Kieran Gibbs is set to be rushed into action as Per Mertesacker is out through injury, meaning that Thomas Vermaelen will finally return to his favourite centre-back position.

Aaron Ramsey should return to the starting line-up, but Jack Wilshire, Abou Diaby, Carl Jenkinson and Andre Santos remain sidelined. Gervinho is unlikely to feature after playing in Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Szczesny – Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Gibbs – Areta, Song – Walcott, Ramsey, Chamberlain – Van Persie.
