Nice vs Marseille preview

Marseille vs NiceNice missed a great chance to climb to Champions League places as they lost to Nancy last time out, but a win over Marseille would certainly make things right.

OM, on the other hand, can virtually eliminate their next opponents from the top 3 chase by winning at Stade Municipal du Ray and that is exactly what they will be looking to do.

Nice have made a remarkable transition from relegation strugglers to the side fighting for European places in less than a year and credit to Claude Puel for making that happen.

The former Lyon helped the team avoid the drop after taking over the reigns in May 2012 and les Aiglons have been on a major uptrend ever since.

Following a remarkable run of results, Nice could have climbed to third place in the standings with three points from Nancy, but they ended up losing the game 1-0.

It is now up to the players to try and make amends for the defeat and revive their Champions League hopes by beating Marseille, with home win paying 2.88 (17/9) at BetVictor.

The hosts have plenty of reason for optimism ahead of the all-important match against OM, having won 8 of their last 10 league fixtures at home.

With star striker Dario Cvitanich returning to the side after a two-month spell on the sidelines, Nice look well prepared for this match.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Ospina – Genevois, Civelli, Gomis, Kolodziejczak – Anin, Digard – Abriel, Bruins, Bautheac – Bahoken.

Marseille, too, have made quite an improvement from last season, which was not that hard to do given that they finished the previous league campaign in 10th place in the standings.

New boss Elie Baup has done much better than his predecessor Didier Deschamps, although his side could not keep up with star-studded PSG team in the Ligue 1 title race.

Marseille also damaged their Champions League chances with goalless draws against Lyon and Ajaccio, which makes the match against Nice very important for the visitors.

However, having failed to win any of their last five games on the travels, there is little value in betting on away win, even if odds are 2.75 (7/4) at Ladbrokes.

Marseille will need to start winning on the road if they are to clinch the final Champions League berth and Stade Municipal du Ray would be a good place to start.

Joey Barton is doubtful with a thigh problem, but Morgan Amalfitano continues to miss out through a knee injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Mandanda – Fanni, N’Koulou, Lucas, Morel – Romao, Barton – Sougou, Valbuena, A. Ayew – Gignac.
