Netherlands Super Cup: Ajax vs Twente preview

The two Dutch giants are getting used to fighting each other for all the major trophies and this will be their third battle for a major trophy in less than three months.

Twente came back from two goals behind to pip Ajax to the KNVB Beker title last season, but the Amsterdammers more than made up for the defeat as they beat the Tukkers on the final day of the season to clinch the Eredivisie title.

The two teams are now set to battle for the Super Cup trophy and there are no doubts that we will see another enthralling encounter.

Ajax enter this season with somewhat changed squad to that which Frank de Boer had at his disposal last term, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.

Demy de Zeeuw, Dario Cvitanich and Rasmus Lindgren are the notable players who left the club, whereas Ajax brought Thulani Serero, Derek Boerrigter and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

However, the biggest capture was undoubtedly the arrival of former Twente captain Theo Janssen, who is now set to face his former teammates for the first time.

Everybody at Ajax are praising the influence of coach Frank de Boer, who has created a great atmosphere in the squad, and nobody was surprised to see the team score eight goals in last two friendlies against Brondby and Independiente.

Taking that into account, it is little wonder that Ajax are odds-on favourites to win this match, being priced 1.74 (37/50) at 188BET.

Maarten Stekelenburg is set to complete his transfer to Roma and he won’t be in contention, while Jan Vertonghen and Siem De Jong miss out through injuries.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Vermeer – van der Wiel, Alderweireld, Ooijer, Boilesen – Eriksen, Enoh, Janssen – Sulejmani, Sigthorsson, Ebecilio.

As I have already mentioned, Twente managed to win the Dutch Cup last season, but ended up losing the league title to their rivals and are now looking to make amends for the defeat on the final day of the season.

The Tukkers had no reason to change what was a very good squad, although they couldn’t stop Theo Janssen from making a switch to Amsterdam ArenA.

They did, however, undergo a change of coach as former Ajax boss Co Adriaanse replaced Michel Preud’homme and he enjoyed a winning start as his side beat Vaslui 2:0 in Champions League 3rd qualifying round.

With Co Adriaanse being an attack-minded coach, Twente are expected to continue the good scoring form and they are 3.40 (12/5) with Bet365 to score two or more goals.

Nacer Chadli and Bryan Ruiz missed the Vaslui game through injuries, but they could be in contention for this game. Roberto Rosales is still not ready to feature after returning from the Copa America.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Mihaylov – Cornelisse, Wisgerhof, Douglas, Buysse – Brama, Berghuis, Bajrami – de Jong, Janko, Chadli.
