Montpellier vs Lyon preview

Lyon vs MontpellierLast weekend’s defeat to Bordeaux is likely to prove costly for Montpellier, but a victory over Lyon would help Remi Garde’s men revive their bid for European places.

Les Gones remained in third as they ended a dismal run of results by beating Toulouse at home and they are hoping to cement their place in the top 3 by claiming maximum points at Stade de la Moson.

Nobody expected Montpellier to join the chase for the league trophy despite Remi Garde’s men gifting the club the first league title in history last term.

La Paillade just could not find the right balance between their domestic and European campaigns and ended up struggling on both fronts.

Once their Champions League campaign was over, Remi Garde’s side managed to raise their game and significantly improved their league position, although the latest poor run of results is likely to deny them the opportunity to fight for European places.

Montpellier may have lost three of last five league games, but they have been pretty impressive at home, winning nine of last ten league fixtures at Stade de la Moson.

With that in mind, there may be some value in betting on home win here, at odds of 2.30 (13/10) offered at Paddy Power.

Cyril Jeuneschamp is still suspended, while Gary Bocaly, Joris Marveaux, Jamel Saihi and Abdoul Sylla continue to miss out. John Utaka and Karim Ait-Fana should return.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Jourdren – Congre, El Kaoutari, Hilton, Bedimo – Cabella, Stambouli – Camara, Belhanda, Mounier – Utaka.

Up until recently, Lyon were doing pretty well in the league and were very much involved in the title race, but les Gones just couldn’t keep up with PSG and Marseille.

Back to back draws against Brest and OM hinted that things are not going according to plan, but it was three successive defeats that ruin team’s chances of fighting for the Ligue 1 title.

Home game against Toulouse was, therefore, very important for les Gones, who were on the verge of slipping out of the top 3, and the players duly delivered, winning the game 3-1 to create a two-point advantage over Saint Etienne and Nice.

With the chasing pack getting closer every week, Lyon need to continue winning games if they are to avoid any surprises, but odds of 3.50 (5/2) offered at BetVictor on away win suggest they face an uphill task at Stade de la Moson.

Having picked up just one point from last three away games in the league, les Gones have little to hope for ahead of the Montpellier clash.

Bafetimbi Gomis returns to the starting line-up after coming off the bench to score against Toulouse, but Alexandre Lacazette misses out through injury.

Milan Bisevac serves the second game of his three-match ban, but Dejan Lovren and Steed Malbranque are back from injury and suspension respectively.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Vercoutre – Fofana, Kone, Umtiti, Dabo – Malbranque, Gonalons, Grenier – Briand, Gomis, Lisandro.
