Euro 2012: Sweden vs France preview

France have all but qualified for the quarter-finals by beating co-hosts Ukraine and they now need just one more point to be safe.

Sweden, on the other hand, are without chances to go through after squandering a one-goal lead to lose to England in their second group game.

Erik Hamren’s side were tipped to cause an upset in Group D and pip either England or France to the second place in the group, but they did no such thing and are already out of the competition after losing their first two games.

That is not to say that Sweden haven’t shown some potential at the tournament finals, but the lack of character and fighting spirit proved to be a major issue.

The Nordic side had the lead against both Ukraine and England, but failed to get anything from the two games and they now enter the France game completely out of confidence.

Boss Erik Hamren is unlikely to make major changes to the starting line-up, although Ola Toivonen, Christian Wilhelmsson and Pontus Wernbloom are pushing for starting places.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to continue in the trequartista role, playing just behind Johan Elmander.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Isaksson – Granqvist, Mellberg, J. Olsson, M. Olsson – Svensson, Kallstrom – Larsson, Ibrahimovic, Wilhelmsson – Elmander.

France arrived to the European Championship in confident mood, after extending their unbeaten run to 21 games and les Bleus enjoyed a bright start to the Euro 2012.

Following the promising display in the 1-1 draw with England, Laurent Blanc’s side really excelled in the 2-0 victory over co-hosts Ukraine and came on the verge of qualifying for the next round.

Les Bleus now need one point to go through and three to finish in first place and thus avoid meeting Spain in the next round.

Seeing that Sweden are already out of the competition, France look a good bet at 1.67 (2/3) offered by bet365.

Boss Blanc is spoilt for choices in all areas of the pitch after back-up players Gael Clichy and Jeremy Menez impressed against Ukraine, especially now that Yann M’Vila has fully recovered from injury.

Both Mathieu Debuchy and Jeremy Mathieu could be rested as they are one yellow card away from suspension, whereas Yohan Cabaye could be left out after picking up a minor knock against Ukraine.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Lloris – Reveillere, Rami, Mexes, Clichy – Nasri, Diarra, M’Vila – Ben Arfa, Benzema, Ribery.
