England vs Scotland preview

Brazil vs England 2-2With two of football’s oldest rivals set to face each other at Wembley on Wednesday night, this will be anything but a friendly match.

As that is usually the case at this point in time, both sides have some important missings to contend with but that is unlikely to spoil the occasion.

England haven’t really impressed in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and they currently sit in second place, but they have been done a huge favour from Ukraine, who defeated group leaders Montenegro back in June.

As a result, the Three Lions are now masters of their own destiny, seeing they sit two points behind Montenegro, but with a game in hand.

On the other hand, while they failed to defeat Ireland at home, England held Brazil to a 2-2 draw in the second friendly game, so they have reason for optimism ahead of the Scotland clash.

Even with a number of high-profile players missing, Betfred has made the Three Lions 1.40 (2/5) favourites for the win.

Roy Hodgson had already been unable to call on Andy Carroll and Daniel Sturridge through injury, while Ashley Young has withdrawn due to an ankle problem.

Wayne Rooney is in the squad despite battling a hamstring problem, while Rickie Lambert has finally been given an opportunity to impress at international level.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Hart – Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Cole – Carrick, Wilshire – Walcott, Gerrard, Milner – Welbeck.

Scotland had been virtually out of contention for a place at the World Cup finals even before Gordon Strachan took over the reigns in January.

The 56-year-old began his campaign with a friendly win over Estonia, but he could do little to prevent qualifying defeats to Wales and Serbia.

However, just as everybody started criticizing the new boss, the Scots produced quite a coup by defeating Croatia away despite travelling with what was virtually a second string side.

There are no doubts the impressive victory has done wonders for the players’ confidence, but odds of 9.00 (8/1) offered at BetVictor on away win are enough to suggest Gordon Strachan’s men face a mountain to climb at Wembley.

Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew, James Forrest and Kenny Miller all return to the side, but Darren Fletcher and Steven Fletcher remain sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): McGregor – Hutton, Hanley, Martin, Mulgrew – McArthur, Brown – Maloney, Morrison, Snodgrass – Miller.
