Copa America: Brazil vs Paraguay preview

The South American giants are set for an exciting battle at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, with the goalless draws in their opening games putting extra pressure on the players before this game.

Brazil largely disappointed at the start of Copa America, having failed to register a goal against Venezuela, but the competition format is such that it gives all the teams a chance to make amends.

Coach Mano Menezes is aware that his side need to show a lot of improvement if they are to beat very good Paraguay side, so I don’t see a big value in odds of 1.67 (2/3) offered by Bet365 on home win.

The interesting thing is that Brazil failed to find the net in four of last six games in all competitions, and Selecao are now 4.75 (15/4) with Sportingbet not to score against Paraguay as well.

While the gaffer has refused to comment on the possible changes in the starting line-up, there are reports that 18-year-old Lucas Silva is set to replace Robinho up front.

Meanwhile, Elano looks set to get the nod in midfield, with Chelsea’s Ramires dropping to the bench.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-1-3): Julio Cesar – Dani Alves, Lucio, Thiago Silva, Andre Santos – Lucas Leiva, Elano – Ganso – Neymar, Pato, Lucas Silva.

Paraguay arrived to the competition in good spirits after their impressive showing at the 2010 World Cup was followed by some pretty good performances in friendly games.

As a result, La Albirroja were considered favourites in their opening game against Ecuador, but they simply couldn’t break the deadlock and had to settle for one point.

Seeing that Gerardo Martino’s team will face Venezuela in their final group game, they probably wouldn’t mind picking up another point against Brazil, but the boss has revealed that La Albirroja will not discard their attacking approach.

With players like Santa Cruz, Barrios and Valdez, Paraguay have no choice but to play attacking football, so odds of 2.20 (6/5) offered by Stan James on both teams to score look too good to pass.

With no fresh injury worries to report, Gerardo Martino is likely to field the same side that started the Ecuador game.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Villar – Piris, Da Silva, Veron, Torres – Barreto, Ortigoza, Riveros, Estigarribia – Santa Cruz, Barrios.
