Bordeaux vs Benfica preview

Benfica vs BordeauxBordeaux will have to work hard if they want to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg, with in-form Benfica clearly the favourites to go through after the 1-0 win at Estadio da Luz.

Les Girondins find themselves in a very difficult position at the moment, and a bright start to the season certainly did not suggest such a scenario.

However, after playing at a really high level until the start of February, Francois Gillot’s side suffered a huge dip in form and have been largely struggling over the last month or so.

The hectic schedule seems to have taken the wind out of their sails, with numerous injury problems preventing the boss from deploying a rotation policy as much as he would have liked.

This has seen Bordeaux lose four straight league games, share spoils with a fourth division side in Coupe de France and lose to Benfica in Europa League, but the team have finally returned to the right track.

Les Girondins not only won the game 1-0, but also managed to rest some of the starters in the process, and they are now 3.00 (2/1) with Stan James to beat Benfica as well.

On the other hand, they are now less than 5.00 (4/1) at SkyBet to overturn the one-goal deficit and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Francois Gillot will have Lamine Sane back from suspension, while a number of first team regulars will return after they were rested at the weekend.

Forward Diego Rolan has picked up an ankle injury, joining Landry N’Guemo and Julian Faubert on the sidelines.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Carrasso – Mariano, Sane, Henrique, Tremoulinas – Plasil, Sertic – Maurice-Belay, Obraniak, Saivet – Diabate.

Similar to Bordeaux, Benfica enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, but they have managed to keep the rich vein of form and are still going strong.

The Eagles may have failed to progress from their Champions League group, but they have since won all three Europa League fixtures and are now considered one of the main candidates for the coveted title.

Jorge Jesus’ side are also going strong in the domestic championship, where they have overturned Porto from the top of the standings.

Benfica were not at their best in the first leg, but still managed to record a 1-0 victory, which gives them plenty of confidence ahead of the return leg.

After beating Gil Vicente 5-0 at the weekend, the Eagles are 2.55 (31/20) with BetVictor to record their fourth successive victory. BetFred has them at 7.50 (13/2) to go all the way.

The visitors are without captain Luisao, who is out with a hamstring problem, but important midfielder Nemanja Matic returns after missing the first leg through suspension.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-3-2): Artur – Pereira, Garay, Jardel, Melgarejo – Matic – Salvio, Perez, Gaitan – Cardozo, Lima.
