Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen preview

SV Werder Bremen v FC Bayern MunichBayern Munich extended their winning run to seven games as they defeated Arsenal at the Emirates, and they now hope to continue their rich vein of form against Werder.

The Bremen outfit arrive at Alianz Arena hoping to make amends for the home defeat to Freiburg, but getting something from this match will be no easy task.

Bayern’s outstanding performances this season are hardly a surprise, but not even the most optimistic fans could have predicted such an amazing run from Jupp Heynckes’ side.

Having virtually secured the league title, the Bavarians are able to fully focus on other competitions and that is producing great results.

A convincing display against Arsenal at the Emirates saw the team come on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals, but Bayern also want to do well in DFB Pokal.

Given that their quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund is scheduled for next Wednesday, boss Heynckes will be tempted to rest some of his starters in the Werder match.

Even with that in mind, the hosts remain 1.22 (2/9) favourites with Coral to win their eighth successive match in all competitions.

Holger Badstuber remains sidelined through injury, while Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez are tipped to start.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Lahm, Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba – Schweinsteiger, Gustavo – Robben, Kroos, Ribery – Gomez.

Werder Bremen have been on a major downtrend over the last few years and the team are struggling to remain in the top half of the Bundesliga standings.

They have been pretty inconsistent from the very start of the league campaign, but a good run of results could still see them return in the race for European places.

Back to back wins over Hannover and Stuttgart significantly improved their position in the standings, but home defeat against Freiburg ruined everything.

Werder will now try to show some improvement at Alianz Arena, but the players are probably well aware that getting something from the Bayern match will be next to impossible.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Aaron Hunt are doubtful with a bout of flu, but Marko Arnautovic returns to the starting line-up.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Mielitz – Ignjovski, Lukimya, Prodl, Schmitz – Junuzovic – Arnautovic, Hunt, de Bruyne, Ekici – Petersen.
