Tottenham vs Lyon preview

Tottenham vs Lazio 0-0High-flying Tottenham aim to make one step further towards the Europa League title, but Ligue 1 giants Lyon have reason to believe they will be the team to progress to the next stage.

After missing out on Champions League qualification despite placing in EPL top 4, Spurs are determined to make things right this season and make sure they return to Europe’s elite competition.

They are certainly on the right track at the moment, sitting four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, but after getting eliminated from domestic Cup competitions, Spurs are also looking to mount a serious title challenge in Europa League.

Tottenham narrowly missed out on a first place in their group, which is why they were pitted against such strong opponents, but the reality is the hosts have no reason to fear the French giants.

Andre Villas-Boas’s side are playing great football at the moment, and they are 1.85 (17/20) with Ladbrokes to record their third win on the bounce.

After finally returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty, Emmanuel Adebayor is 3.00 (2/1) at BetVictor to score against Lyon.

Jermain Defoe, Sandro and Younes Kaboul continue to miss out, but Jan Vertonghen, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Emmanuel Adebayor should all start.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Lloris – Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto – Parker, Dembele – Lennon, Holtby, Bale – Adebayor.

After winning seven straight Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008, Lyon have been on a major downtrend, and the club also appear to be in serious financial problems.

In spite of selling several starters in the summer, les Gones have done pretty well this season, although they did suffer disappointing exits from domestic Cups.

Lyon eased off to Europa League knockout stages, having picked up 16 points from 6 games in group phase, but they were then handed a very difficult draw.

This match comes at a bad time for Remi Garde’s side, with Lyon losing their last two league games to Ajaccio and Lille, and we are yet to see whether they can recover from two disappointing defeats.

Les Gones are now 2.30 (13/10) with bet365 to qualify for the next stage, but I certainly would not recommend backing the French side to go through.

The visitors will have Dejan Lovren and Bakary Kone back from suspension and international duty respectively, but Jimmy Briand is injured and Arnold Mvuemba is ineligible.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Vercoutre – Reveillere, Lovren, Bisevac, Dabo – Malbranque, Gonalons, Grenier – Lacazette, Gomis, Lopez.
