Lyon vs Tottenham preview

Tottenham vs LyonMagnificent Gareth Bale ensured Tottenham take a one-goal advantage to Stade Gerland, but the 2-1 win in the first leg might not prove enough for Spurs to qualify.

Lyon go into this game on the back of a 4-0 victory over Bordeaux, and les Gones will fancy their chances of reaching the next stage.

After the likes of Cris, Cissokho, Lloris, Ederson and Kallstrom all left in the summer, club officials had no choice but to focus on their own youth academy, given that a difficult financial situation prevented them from making big name signings.

This has seen players like Gonalons, Umtiti, Fofana, Grenier, Ghezzal and Lacazette all become important members of the side, hinting the future is bright for les Gones.

The squad rejuvenation process did not stop Lyon from impressing in both Ligue 1 and Europa League, although they have achieved nothing just yet.

Lyon managed to close the gap behind league leaders PSG to just three points with an outstanding 4-0 victory at Bordeaux, with Remi Garde’s side 2.25 (5/4) with SkyBet to beat Tottenham as well.

With no fresh injuries to report, the talented coach is set to field the same side that started the match at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Vercoutre – Reveillere, Lovren, Bisevac, Umtiti – Gonalons, Fofana – Lacazette, Grenier, Lopez – Gomis.

Tottenham made it clear from the very start to the season they were interested in winning the Europa League title and Spurs appear to be on the right track at the moment.

Spurs were well below par in the first leg against Lyon, but amazing Gareth Bale came to the rescue, scoring two beautiful free-kick goals to make it 2-1 to the hosts.

Andre Villas-Boas’ side were not in action at the weekend, meaning they will have had a full week to prepare for the all-important clash at Stade Gerland.

Tottenham are unlikely to have an easy task in France, but they remain 1.55 (11/20) favourites with Betfair to qualify for the next round.

Jermain Defoe and Younes Kaboul continue to miss out, while Tom Huddlestone is an injury doubt.

There are unlikely to be major changes to the side that started the first leg, but Michael Dawson could return to the side.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Friedel – Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto – Parker, Dembele – Lennon, Dempsey, Bale – Adebayor.
