Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is set to return into action, following the eight-month spell on the sidelines.

The Belgium international will make his return playing for Arsenal reserves against Manchester United.

The 25-year-old was given the all clear to feature in the match at Altrincham by the Arsenal medical team and he could return to the first team squad before the season is over.

Vermaelen missed the big part of the season after picking up an Achilles injury and his absence was the main reason behind Arsenal’s struggles in the second part of the season.

The Belgian has largely impressed after arriving at the Emirates from Ajax and he has helped stabilize Arsenal’s shaky back line.

Having dropped out from all cup competitions and being nine points behind leaders United in the Premier League, Arsenal are set to finish sixth successive season without a trophy.
